Opening Remarks by Ambassador Ertaş at AIPA Tomorrow London Summit
Dear President Şahin, Dear guests,
It is a great pleasure to host the second edition of the AIPA Tomorrow London Summit.
I am particularly happy to open our historic residence for an event that focuses on such a transformative concept; AI.
I want to start by commending AIPA for focusing on such an important and timely topic.
I also should thank Türkiye’s Radio and TV Supreme Council for being part of this endeavour.
We are hearing various data about the impact of AI on our daily lives—from jobs to development, from health to security.
Change is happening so fast. It was only two years ago that we were talking about AI as something in the distant future. Now, with AGI on the horizon, things are evolving at great speed. We are waking up to fascinating news every other day.
AI’s generative nature accelerates innovation, shaping a new era where continuous advancement determines national strength.
Quantum computing will further amplify this cycle, propelling breakthroughs across disciplines from biotech to semiconductors.
The advent of AGI will empower pioneers to lead in scientific and technological domains, similar to historical periods of technological supremacy.
Indeed, AI’s rapid evolution promises to transform our lives in countless ways. It is expected to revolutionize our world—from healthcare to climate action, from public services to enhancing quality of life.
For emerging economies, AI presents immense opportunities to foster development, increase productivity, and tackle ongoing challenges.
However, as we harness the power of AI, we must confront ethical and social concerns, such as biased algorithms, job displacement, and the potential for malicious use.
The debate is widespread in this regard. For instance, regarding sustainability, while some experts argue that generative AI could catalyze breakthroughs in the fight against climate change, others have raised alarms about the technology’s massive carbon footprint. Indeed, its enormous processing power requires energy-intensive data centers.
I think there are 4 key concepts to focus on.
First is innovation. It drives our progress. We need innovation to use the potential for the benefit of humanity.
Second comes regualtion. There are different approaches to this in Europe, Asia, and the U.S. We need to strike a fine balance between innovation and regulation.
Thirdly, safety remains paramount. As AI evolves rapidly, so too must our strategies to mitigate risks, ensuring it serves society safely and ethically.
Finally, inclusivity is essential. AI should be accessible and beneficial to all, especially in addressing poverty and climate change.
Türkiye, as a rising player, is committed to leveraging AI responsibly and ethically. We believe in its potential for good but also recognize the need for wise utilisation.
AI is an important field of cooperation between Turkiye and the U.K. The UK’s tech industry is valued at over $1 trillion and is home to 85,000 startups and scale-ups. Our countries wiil continue to cooperate in the AI and high-tech domains.
We are seeing an increasing number of collaborations between our tech sectors, and we are working hard to level the playing field.
Civil society has an important role to play in this endeavor, and I commend AIPA for its commitment to raising awareness and increasing collaboration.
As we convene today, let us chart a course where AI serves as a force for good, propelling us toward a future where innovation, safety, and inclusivity drive global progress.
Thank you.
